We Care Because We've Been There

My grandmother, the caregiver for our grandfather, passed away 6 weeks before my grandfather with Alzheimer’s from caregiver stress. So when I started in senior care in 2002, I became a caregiver advocate, never wanting one disease to take two people again.

On my mother’s side this is multi-generational, and starts in the mid-60’s. Our beautiful, gentle mother, who shared her love and hugs, and laughed throughout life - with disease often displayed fluctuating mood patterns, personality and behavior changes including rage, paranoia, and violence. Too many 911 calls. I learned never to go to bed without a ½ tank of gas, because that is what I needed for the 150-mile drive from my home to my parents in an emergency. Dad would call 5 or 6 times a day to talk or cry or yell as he was falling apart trying to deal with all of this. – I was “his” person. Dad fought us on placement for a while. One of the 911 calls ended with an APS visit telling our family this was the last time placement was our decision. We eventually placed mom – a decision made for the benefit of both our parents, and I truly believe saved dad’s life. Mom passed at only 77 in January of 2020. We lost dad in December of 2020. While his cause of death was medical, we know it was of a broken heart. Theirs was a 58 year love affair.

My father-in-law’s journey with dementia was different. He was a gentle soul without behaviors and remained at home. We then lost my mother-in-law in September of 2023 to depression induced dementia. The loss of her husband, the forced covid lock-down, followed by years of isolation, increased cognitive deficits, and quickly took a toll.

For all of us, our shared experience of losing someone to dementia strengthens our determination. Our shared grief is not about death, It’s the shared experience about the loss of the way things were, the loss of who they used to be, and how we share a grief of loss before they are actually gone.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your family journey.

What Families Say
David
"I want to emphasize just how much Ronda’s care, knowledge, and empathy meant to us during the most difficult year of our lives. Her unwavering support, exceptional skill, and genuine compassion not only provided my mother with a better quality of life but also gave my family the strength and peace of mind we desperately needed. I truly do not know how we would have managed without Ronda’s guidance and care."
Karen
“You have been such a blessing to our family – Being so far away. You have been there at every turn. We are grateful to you and your spirit.”
Patrice
"Ronda was kind, caring, personable, compassionate and fun too. She was someone I respected and trusted. I can't thank Ronda enough - she is a true gem. Anyone whom Ronda cares for is very fortunate; not only because of the wonderful personal qualities she possesses, but also because she has a boatload of experience in the complexities of caring for others. She is highly skilled — and the icing on the cake is her heart is 100% all in."
